In Chinatown your senses will be filled with
the sights, sounds and smells of Asia. The first Chinese came here at
the end of the 19th Century, when the Canadian Pacific Railway recruited
15,000 Chinese labourers. They gladly came, planning to work on the railroad
and then make their fortunes in the gold fields. But work on the railway
was dangerous and difficult and many died. Promises of gold never materialized.
